Fans react to Cristiano Ronaldo proposing with gigantic ring
Worth the wait! Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly paid over R87-million for his girlfriend's engagement ring.
Social media users are in awe (and disgust) over the enormous engagement ring Cristiano Ronaldo gave his girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez.
The ring is so big that Katy Perry and the Blue Origin crew could have seen it from outer space.
Experts believe the diamond is at least 30 carats, and that's just the centre stone. Jewellers estimate the ring costs as much as $5 million (R87 million).
After over eight years of dating, Ronaldo and Rodriguez announced their engagement on
"Yes, I do. In this and in all my lives," she captioned a picture of her mammoth-sized engagement ring.
With a reported net worth of more than $275 million, Ronaldo is one of the wealthiest athletes in the world. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid football star currently plays for Al-Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia.
He certainly can afford an engagement ring that costs millions of dollars.
However, some social media users think that just because you can doesn't mean you should. Some called the ring "tacky", "tasteless" and "hideous".
One X user said, "I wish the algorithm would stop showing me that hideous engagement ring Cristiano Ronaldo gave Georgina Rodriguez."
Another wrote: "It looks ugly and ridiculous."
Others warned the Portuguese star to protect his wealth. "I hope @Cristiano has either transferred his wealth to his mom or made Georgina sign a prenup."
Some saw no problem with the gigantic ring, saying it was a fitting size for someone who waited over eight years for a proposal.
"Ronaldo isn't ordinary. This is Mount Augustus on a finger deserving of all the love in the world," an Instagram user said.
The footballer met in 2016. At the time, she worked at a Gucci store in Madrid, Spain.
"I remember once in a Bugatti. My coworkers went crazy. They get there on the bus, and I would leave in a Bugatti. I mean, people couldn't believe it," she said on her Netflix reality show, 'I Am Georgina'.
The couple have three children: Alana (7) and twins Bella (3) and Ángel. Sadly, they did not get to leave the hospital with Ángel as he died during childbirth.
Ronaldo also has three older children: 15-year-old Cristiano Jr., and eight-year-old twins Eva Maria and Mateo.
As for why he took so long to propose, Ronaldo was waiting for "that click".
"I always tell her, 'When we get that click.' Like everything with our life, and I know she knows what I’m talking about. It could be in a year, or it could be in six months, or it could be in a month. I’m 1,000% sure that it’ll happen," he said on Georgina's reality show.
