Gordhan: SA electricity sector ‘contributes 40% of carbon emissions’
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan says the electricity sector is the biggest contributor to the country’s carbon emissions.

It’s contribution stands at more than 40%.
Gordhan was speaking at the Presidential Climate Commission, which hosted an event on South Africa’s long-term electricity planning and the Just Energy Transition on Friday.
The commission was formed by President Cyril Ramaphosa and in 2020 to oversee and facilitate a just transition from a high carbon economy to a low emissions and climate resilient economy.
“The electricity sector in South Africa is the biggest contributor to carbon emissions with over 40% and that is why the focus is on the sector to the extent that it is,” said Gordhan.
The minister said developing countries should make their voices heard on the issue of climate change.
“Climate change is a huge danger to humanity and urgent action needs to be taken against it to protect SA and Africa. Developing countries should fight back towards the developed world in order to be in the competitive field regarding climate change.
“Developing countries need to make their voice heard by developed countries in terms of funding for the climate change initiative as they contributed the most in causing the problem.”
