The Rooiwal water treatment plant and surrounding farming communities are supplied by the temporary Pyramid substation, which was gutted by fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba says the city managed to quickly restore power to the Rooiwal power station, which is in the vicinity of the Pyramid substation.

However, many residents remain in the dark.

"The energy and electricity department and the regional operations department have sourced the required materials and are working on plans to improve power supply to the WWTP through feeding directly from another substation.

“Once power has been restored to the waste treatment plant, teams will then begin to channel all efforts toward energising the farming communities that have also been affected by the outage," says Bokaba.

Bokaba says preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of the fire emanated from lighting.

"Technicians are still currently investigating and assessing the full scale of the damage."

At the same time, the city has managed to restore power to areas affected by vandalism at the Heatherley substation.

"We want to assure residents that all communities that are fed from Heatherley Substation have now been switched back on. Parts of Nellmapius Ext 8 and 12 have also been reconnected to the power grid.  Affected households and businesses in these areas can now resume their normal activities.”
