ActionSA to abstain from no-confidence motion against Morero
ActionSA said it will abstain from the motion of no confidence vote against Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero.
The DA submitted the motions of no confidence against the mayor and council speaker Nobuhle Mthembu earlier this month.
Morero was elected mayor in August last year after Al Jama-ah’s Kabelo Gwamanda was removed following allegations of fraud involving a funeral policy scam in 2011.
The DA has accused Morero of worsening the poor state of service delivery in the city.
ActionSA’s National Chairperson Michael Beaumont accused the DA of being irresponsible by submitting the motion without communicating with other parties on an alternative government that will fill the position of mayor.
“The Democratic Alliance has brought this motion of no confidence today but they have not communicated with any other political parties to get their support. Which raises the question ‘are we again talking about a gimmick that takes place at the expense of the credibility stability of the city?” Beaumont said.
“But it gets worse the DA has not told you or me what other government would take the place of this one if the motion succeeds,"
Beaumont added the DA had previously refused to participate in motions of no confidence but is now contradicting itself in proposing the current one.
He further accused the DA of promising Mayoral Committee positions to Al Jama-ah should they support them in voting out current Johannesburg Mayor.
The DA’s Caucus Whip Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku has since denied ActionSA’s claims saying they have never engaged with the Al Jama-ah party.
ActionSA has, however, reaffirmed its position in supporting its council speaker Mthembu against the motion of confidence that is set to take place on Thursday.
