Agreement signed by Tshwane, govt to improve water supply in city
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The City of Tshwane and the Department of Water and Sanitation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding as part of efforts to improve water supply in the metro.

The agreement will see the two entities work together on water issues, including infrastructure planning and development.
The city has been struggling to ensure safe water for some in parts of the city, including residents of Hammanskraal, which has not had running clean water for almost two decades due to the failures at the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant.
In 2023, the public protector made adverse findings against the municipality for failing to provide clean water to Hammanskraal residents following a cholera outbreak that claimed 40 lives.
As part of the agreement, an engineering candidacy development programme will be established to assist with the deployment of candidate engineers to the city.
"Once implemented successfully, the programme will assist CoT to comply with the new ECSA Identification of Engineering Work Regulations," said city spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
"Other key areas of collaboration that the MoU will focus on include Sustainable Development Goal 6 - clean water and sanitation, training and capacity building, including secondment of staff between the parties.
"Education and awareness campaigns, knowledge-sharing, benchmarking of programmes, joint enforcement programmes for water pollution prevention amongst others.”
