All hands on deck: All police leave cancelled as riots in Gauteng, KZN continue
The South African Police Service has recalled members who are on leave or deployed anywhere else in the country to reinforce those battling to quell the violence in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
The decision taken at the Safety and Security Sectoral Bargaining Council on Monday follows hot on the heels of the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) says this will help curb the spread of protests.
“Parties to council agreed on a recall of SAPS Act members who are on leave or are deployed elsewhere, to be redeployed towards working to curb the spread of these protests,” says spokesperson Richard Mamabolo.
Mamabolo says members who are recalled will not forfeit their benefits.

Popcru has also called for an immediate implementation of the danger allowance for its members.
“Deployment of the senior management on all operational imperatives and the implementation of SSSBC Collective Agreements 2 and 3 of 2014 respectively in order to ensure that members are compensated. Accordingly the National Police Commissioner must declare this unrest as a national event.”
