Amnesty International SA urges upholding of human rights during election

Amnesty International South Africa has urged the IEC, political parties, and other authorities to ensure that human rights are upheld on election day.

The human rights organisation said in a statement on Tuesday that all eligible voters must be given an opportunity to vote without fear or intimidation.
South Africans will head to the polls on Wednesday to cast their votes in the country’s seventh general elections.
Amnesty International's Executive Director in South Africa, Shenilla Mohamed, says the organisation will monitor the entire election process.
"The Bill of Rights in the Constitution grants all citizens, 18 and older, the right to vote, and this was one of the rights which was fought for during the fight for freedom in South Africa.
"Amnesty International South Africa will be monitoring the situation on election day and in the days after the poll when votes will be counted," said Mohamed.
Mohamed also called on voters to consider human rights when they make their mark on Wednesday.
