National officials were set to deliberate the long-awaited reconfiguration of leadership in the two provinces.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula announced in January that the two provinces would be restructured following their poor electoral performance in the 2024 general election.

The top seven leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, will lead the meeting.

The ANC failed to secure a national majority in the May elections, falling below the 50% mark for the first time.

Support in KwaZulu-Natal dropped significantly to 17%, largely due to the rise of former president Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe Party, which only received 34% of the vote in Gauteng.

In December, the National Working Committee engaged the provincial executive committees of both provinces to address their poor electoral performance.

The discussions led to calls for dissolving provincial leadership structures, but the NEC opted for reconfiguration.

Since the party’s January 8 celebration in the Western Cape, the NWC has failed to meet for weeks to finalise the new leadership for Gauteng and KZN.

There are signs of division within the party, with some supporting the reconfiguration while others are opposed.

In February, ANC Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi expressed his support for the national leadership’s plan to restructure the provincial leadership.

"We want to thank our national leadership for supporting us to be where we are until this rally… But most importantly, comrades, we want to thank each and every one of you.

"When others wrote the death certificate of the ANC in Gauteng, you stood firm. You defended us and declared that the ANC still exists in this province.

“In this heat, you are not here for yourselves, not just for your children, but to send a strong message that the ANC lives, the ANC leads," said Lesufi.

He vowed Gauteng would be ready to implement the national leadership’s decision and work with those deployed to support the province.
