ANC welcomes ConCourt’s ruling on local govt candidate list

The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the Constitutional Court’s decision to uphold the Independent Electoral Commission’s decision to reopen the candidate nomination list.

This after the Democratic Alliance (DA) took to the court earlier this month arguing that the IEC's decision was unconstitutional as the previous order of the ConCourt did not suggest that the candidate's list must be reopened.
Several political parties including the ANC failed to meet last month’s deadline to submit their candidate names for the upcoming local government elections on November 1.
The ANC failed to submit its lists and candidates in 20 municipalities and 598 wards.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), African Transformation Movement (ATM), and the South African Institute of Race Relations supported the DA’s application to have the deacon reversed.
But the apex court ruled in favour of the IEC on Monday.
ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa says the ConCourt’s ruling is important for democratic processes.
“We welcome the decision of the Constitutional Court handed down today to allow the reopening of candidate registration and enable all South Africans to participate in the elections and be able to vote for eligible candidates of their choice,”
Ramaphosa addressed alliance partners on Monday during Cosatu’s 7th Central Committee Meeting.
“The election campaign that we are going into will be short and we will have to embark on a campaign that is targeted and we must be able to be on the ground mobilising as many of our people as possible.”
He added the party still had a lot of ground to cover ahead of the polls.
