In a statement, the council said the tremor was located in the south of Johannesburg, west of Doornkop in Soweto.

"The earthquake registered a local magnitude of approximately 2.5 as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network," said Geoscience spokesperson Mahlatse Mononela.

The biggest quake originated from Boksburg on 10 June, which measured a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale.
