The crash, involving a truck and a minibus taxi, happened near the Bergville Interchange on Saturday.

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said emergency personnel, police, and traffic officers were on the scene and expressed condolences to the victims' families.

"I have just been informed by our highly dedicated and efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate about another horrific accident involving a truck on the N3.

"The accident took place a few minutes ago.

"We request motorists traveling towards Gauteng to approach the area with caution as emergency personnel and members of the South African Police Services are on the scene," Duma said.

The MEC confirmed that he has assigned a team from the department to locate the families of the victims “whose lives have been altered by this tragedy.”

Duma drew parallels with last weekend’s crash, also involving a truck, in which six people were killed between Amatigulu and Dokodweni.

"Last weekend, at the same time, there was a horrific accident involving a truck and light motor vehicle between Amatigulu and Dokodweni. Five members of the same family and a truck driver died on the scene of the accident.

"Tomorrow, we will lay to rest five members of the same family in Ndwedwe," he said.

The MEC reiterated that the government is intensifying its road safety strategy but emphasised that safety remains a collective responsibility.

"While we are ensuring visibility on our roads, it is important to note that road safety is a shared responsibility. Research has proven that changing road user behavior is central to making our roads safer.

"In fact, statistics indicate that up to 87 percent of all road fatalities in the country can be attributed to road user behavior," Duma added.
