Beloved math and science whiz William Smith dies

Much-loved veteran math and science teacher William Smith has died at the age of 85.

Smith was a household name in South Africa as a television tutor on the Learning Channel.

His family confirmed that Smith died after a recent diagnosis of advanced-stage cancer.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of William Smith, who left us peacefully today at home in Perth, Australia, surrounded by family. William was recently diagnosed with advanced, incurable cancer,” said his daughter, Jessica Smith Penfold.

Smith was surrounded by family when he passed away at his home.

From the early 1990s, Smith worked to encourage pupils to understand and fall in love with math and science – teaching complex subjects on television for over two decades.

Smith received many accolades and awards in his illustrious career, including the national order of the Boabab in silver in 2019.

In the statement, Smith’s daughter said following his cancer diagnosis – her father faced his last moments with grace – expressing contentment in his accomplishments and the impact he made in the fields of education and conservation.

“He faced his final moments with grace, expressing contentment in his accomplishments and the impact he made in the fields of education and conservation. His legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the difference he made. William will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him,” his family said in a statement.

Social media is abuzz with tributes, with many thanking Smith for helping them through their matric year.
