Black Sash welcomes reinstatement of ‘disappointing’ R350 grant

Human Rights organisation Black Sash has welcomed the reinstatement and expansion of Social Relief of Distress grant.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the decision on Sunday.
The grant of R350, administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), will also be extended to unemployed caregivers who currently receive child support grants.
The grant expired in January 2021.
"It is concerning though that the grant was not increased to the food poverty line which is currently R585. The Black Sash calls on the SASSA to ensure more effective implementation of the SRD grant by urgently attending to the grants administrative inefficiencies," said the organisation’s Esley Philander
She called on SASSA to improve the application process, appeals, payment processes to ensure a quicker turnaround time.
