As South Africans observe Child Protection Week, the role of mothers in harming children has been highlighted by the conviction and life sentence against missing Joshlin Smith’s mother in the Western Cape.

In Gauteng, police have made the grim discovery of a body thought to be that of two-year-old Kutlwano Shalaba, who was allegedly sold by his mother.
Keneiwe Shalaba was arrested a charged for the murder of her son last year.
Police now say a second suspect has been arrested.
The child’s body discovered in a shallow grave in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, more than six months after his mother reported him missing.
A 50-year-old man, believed to be a sangoma, was arrested on Thursday.
"During preliminary investigations, he led the police to a shallow grave at Waterpan road near R28, Bekkersdal where the remains of a toddler were discovered. The remains are suspected to be of Kutlwano,” said Gauteng police’s Tintswalo Sibeko.
He will join Kutlwano’s mother in the dock.
DNA tests will be done to determine the identity of the body that was found.
