Body found at illegal mine in Limpopo

Police in Limpopo launched an investigation following the discovery of the body of a suspected illegal miner at Zwartkrans Mine near Makapan's Valley in Mokopane.

On Thursday, members of Operation Vala Umgodi received information about a body buried in a shallow grave at one of the illegal mining shafts.
Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba said upon arrival at the scene, they discovered the body covered with large rocks.
“The retrieval operation, which included SAPS, EMS, and Mogalakwena mining company, commenced the following day using relevant equipment and other resources.”
“The operation only concluded on Sunday, 16 February, at approximately 14:00 due to rainfall when the body, believed to be that of a Lesotho national already in a decomposing state, was successfully retrieved.”
The circumstances surrounding the death are under investigation.
