A Free State police search rescue unit has retrieved the body of a motorist who was swept away by flash floods in Kroonstad over the weekend.

The 50-year-old man was trying to drive through a flooded road when his car was washed away.
"The search and rescue unit was called to an unfortunate incident after a drowning incident was reported," said police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli.
"The team had to search for a male person who drowned after he tried to drive through a body of water.
"We are pleading with motorists and community members in general to avoid using flooding bridges when it rains. Be careful when you walk or drive over lower-lying bridges, as water can rise without warning."
In Bloemfontein, four motorists were left stranded under a bridge after their vehicles were fully submerged under water.
The four motorists managed to escape unharmed.
