Boyfriend arrested for murder of Free State teacher

Free State police have arrested a man accused of murdering a 41-year-old teacher from Tsoseletso Secondary School in Bloemfontein.

The Department of Education in the province confirmed that Judith Mpho Moalusi was allegedly killed by her boyfriend on Youth Day.

The provincial department's spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, said the accused reportedly drove a car over the victim’s body multiple times.

He then left her on the scene.

"After his arrest, the perpetrator led the police to the crime scene where a decomposed body of the deceased was found,” said Ndaba.

“Basic Education continues to see unacceptable acts of explicit and subliminal violence committed on girl-learners and female educators on a daily basis.”

Meanwhile, education activist Hendrick Makaneta has urged the NPA to ensure the successful prosecution of the accused.

"The loss of life, particularly that of a teacher, is very distressing as it robs the country's learners of quality time for learning and teaching. Some of the learners may not be able to recover from the post-traumatic stress disorder caused by the untimely death of their teacher.

"It is for this reason that we plead with the prosecution authority to ask the court for a very lengthy jail term for the perpetrator in order to send a message to society in general that killing our teachers will not be tolerated.”

This latest incident comes just weeks after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Gender-Based Violence Bill into law in an effort to tackle the issue of GBV in the country.
