Ekurhuleni head of forensic audits gunned down

Gauteng police are investigating the murder of a high-ranking auditor from the City of Ekurhuleni.

Mpho Mafole, who was the head of corporate and forensic audits at the city, was shot and killed in Kempton Park. 

He was shot dead by unknown suspects on Monday, while driving on the R23 in Esselen Park. 

The motive for the shooting is unknown.

City spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe said all necessary security protocols remain in place, and additional support will be made available to staff who may need it.

"We understand that this news may cause concern among staff. We wish to assure you that the city is committed to ensuring a safe and secure working environment for all employees.

"We encourage all staff to remain vigilant, support one another, and report any suspicious activity to your line manager or the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department."

Before being appointed to Ekurhuleni, Mafole served as Investigations Manager at the Auditor General of South Africa.

The Southern African Institute of Government Auditors also paid tribute to Mafole, described him as a dedicated public servant who was committed to excellence.

Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said no arrests have been made.

"On 30 June 2025 at about 17:55, the police attended to a shooting incident where they found the victim lying in his car with gun shot wounds. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage and police investigations continue."
