Burst pipe leads to major water disruptions in Joburg
Updated | By Martine van der Walt Ehlers
Rand Water is battling to restore water supply to large parts of Johannesburg following a major pipe burst.

Areas in the north and the east of the city that are supplied by the Signal Hill, Northridge, Alexander, Bedford, Germiston, Klipfontein and Brakfontein reservoirs are all affected.
The areas include Germiston, Bedfordview, Primrose Hill, Windsor, Isando, Glen Marais, Kempton Park, Halfway House, Rooihuiskraal, Kosmosdal, Southcrest, Linmeyer, Diepsloot and Tembisa.
Rand Water's Eddie Singo says the impact of the outage may be felt even further afield.
"If worst comes to worst we might have a little bit of an impact in Tshwane, but we are hoping that it doesn't get that far.”
The reason for the burst pipe is not yet known.
"There are a whole host of reasons and at the moment we want to ascertain the correct one. Some of these pipes are old. Sometimes it's just a normal pipe burst that would happen.
"Pipes could get damaged because of vandalism and they could also get damaged due to corrosion,” explains Singo.
Technicians have been working on the problem since Saturday night but only started repairs on Sunday morning.
"We are expecting repair work to conclude 20:00 on Sunday,” says Singo.
"If anything changes we will issue a statement to update customers.”
