Hawks spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamu says the decision to withdraw does not mean the charges will not be reinstated.

"We'd like to state that nothing can stop us from brining any evidence that we'll come up with after our investigation to bring it forward to the court to place it on the roll.

"The other two accused - Owen Landi and Emmanuel Shabani - their matter is now remanded in custody until Friday when they come and do the bail application hearing."

A case was opened after the trio allegedly attempted to extort money from a businessman.

It is alleged the businessman was contacted by one of the suspects in June and claimed that he was referred to him by his partner.

They set up a meet at a mutual place in Isando, east of Johannesburg and on their arrival, the complainant alleged that the suspect took out diamonds, placed it on the table and from nowhere they were joined by two other suspects who presented themselves as police officials.

They immediately demanded a R100 000 bribe from the businessman to squash the illegal diamond deal.
