Chris Hani Baragwanath spent R3m to keep lights on

Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi has revealed the amount of money it has cost Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto to keep its emergency generators running.

The hospital, which is the biggest in the southern hemisphere, has spent R3.4 million so far this year on diesel for its emergency generators.
Last year the hospital spent R2.63 million on diesel for its 20 generators, and R321 000 the previous year.
The DA’s Jack Bloom says this is further proof that all public hospitals should be exempted from load shedding.
“The generators only provide power for emergency operations, so elective surgery must be cancelled with effects for patients on long waiting lists.
“It’s a pity the hospital has to spend so much money on diesel in order to keep essential functions going when power is cut.”
