Chris Hani's killer Janusz Walus to be deported

The government has confirmed that Janusz Walus will be deported to his home country of Poland following the completion of his parole.

The Polish immigrant was convicted of the assassination of former SACP Secretary-General Chris Hani.


The 71-year-old was released on parole in 2022 following a Constitutional Court order.


He will be deported on Friday.


The Department of Correctional Services has handed him over to the Department of Home Affairs for deportation.


He held dual Polish and South African citizenship from 1986 until his South African citizenship was revoked in 2017.


"The parole period of Janusz Walus has come to an end in line with the Constitutional Court decision,” said Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni. 


"Since Janus Walus no longer holds any South African enabling documents, the Department of Home Affairs will be deporting him,


"This morning, the National Commissioner of Correctional Services will formally hand over Janusz Walus to the Department of Home Affairs for deportation.”


Ntshavheni said the Hani family has been informed of the situation.


"During this engagement, the government delegation received a request for an inquest from Chris Hani's widow, and the South African Communist Party.


"The request will be referred to the Department of Justice and Correctional Services," she added.
