City Power to charge more for electricity from Monday

City Power will charge residents of Johannesburg more for electricity from Monday.

The tariff changes came after the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) approved the utility’s request for an average increase of 12.7%.
City Power's spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the decision to hike prices took into account various factors, including the energy supplier's operations and customers.
"Our tariffs are determined by several key factors such as the industry inflation driven by increases in bulk purchases cost, our operational cost and cost structure.
"Our tariff application to NERSA was in line with the consideration of the current economic conditions where most of our residents are affected by the rising costs of living, and we considered our customers' best interest to cushion them while ensuring sustainable service delivery continues".
Mangena says not all residents will pay 12.72% more for electricity from 1 July.
"Some customers will experience a slightly lower tariff increase, while an increase to others may well be above the 12.72% threshold.
"For instance, the average increase to a typical indigent customer was limited to 6.21% as they are the most vulnerable customer category.”
