The audits will continue into August as the entity moves to modernise and streamline operations.

The utility said the audits will be conducted in Hursthill, Randburg, Roodepoort and Reuven Service Delivery Centres to enhance the accuracy of electricity billing.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that all residents supplied by the utility must pay for the electricity they use.

He warned that customers that refuse to be audited will be disconnected and fined R14,000.

Once disconnected, the customers will have to pay additional reconnection fees.

“We urge customers to please be cooperative and allow our metering technicians to complete their work efficiently. If residents are unavailable, our technicians will leave a ‘No Access’ letter by the customer’s premises with the company name and contact details. In addition, we will provide the SDC name and team leader’s contact details,” said Mangena.

“Customers are urged to immediately make arrangements for the audit. This programme is being rolled out in phases, with future audits and meter replacements scheduled across other SDCs  in the coming days."

Mangena added that the power utility is aware of safety concerns, including criminals who might pose as contractors or employees of City Power.

He urged customers verify the credentials of City Power employees and contractors

“All City Power employees and contractors are required to carry and produce their official ID cards while on duty. These ID cards are colour-coded according to the different sections within City Power and display important identifying information."
