City Power seizes illegal cables worth R300k in Alex crackdown
Updated | By Selaki Ledwaba
City Power confiscated about 8,000 kilograms of mixed aluminium cables and wires worth R300,000 in Alexandra on Wednesday.

The power utility, working alongside the Johannesburg metro police and Johannesburg City Parks, targeted hotspots along London Road in Alexandra, where illegal connections were said to be putting significant strain on the electricity grid and destabilising the network.
In April this year, City Power conducted a similar operation where 20,000 kg of aluminium cables worth approximately R450,000 were removed and confiscated.
City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava said the resistance to buying electricity by residents results in a huge loss of revenue for the utility and destabilises the network.
"We will not tire in our efforts to correct this disruptive habit," said Mashava
“Instead of engaging in illegal connections and meter tampering, which could result in serious injury or fatality, we encourage low-income households who are eligible for the expanded social package to register for the free basic electricity in order to get free monthly electricity units."
