City Power urges protection of infrastructure amid rise in vandalism
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Johannesburg City Power has called on residents in Lombardy East and Alexandra to help protect infrastructure amid an increase in incidents of vandalism.

City Power says they recorded four incidents of transformer vandalism in the area in recent weeks.
It resulted in widespread and prolonged power outages, leaving hundreds of residents and businesses without electricity.
City Power said in some cases the extent of the damage forced the city to replace the transformers.
The utility says the damages on its infrastructure places a significant financial burden on City Power but also poses logistical challenges, as replacement of transformers are difficult to source.
Each of the transformers costs between R800,000 to R1.2 million to replace.
"We will not tolerate anyone within our midst involved in these criminal acts and undoing the progress we are making in improving the quality of services," said City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava
"We urge residents, neighbourhood watch groups, community patrollers, councillors, and private security companies to become our eyes."
City Power says they are working to finalise repairs and restore supply as soon as possible.
