Comrades Marathon cancels 2021 race over Covid-19

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has decided to cancel the ultra-marathon for a second consecutive year.

The centenary race was scheduled for 13 June.
Organisers are worried about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
CMA chairperson Cheryl Winn says it was a difficult decision to make.
“It was a very painful decision for us to make as organisers with this being our centenary year and we realise that there are many disappointed runners out there as well as other supporters of the race.
“But our second consideration was our obligation to preserve resources that we do have so that we can host the race when this terrible pandemic eventually subsides.”
“We will once again be staging a virtual race but this year, we hope to promote the event and we’re hoping, if possible, to even double the numbers from last year.”
Winn says the association remains optimistic that the race will be run next year.
Last week Cape Town's prestigious Two Oceans Marathon was also cancelled.
