Consumer commission begins probe into recalled apple juice products
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has launched an investigation into recalled apple juice products.
Acting national consumer commissioner Thezi Mabuza says the NCC will launch an investigation into the conduct of Elgin Fruit Juice (PTY) LTD.
Elgin Fruit Juice supplies 100% apple juice concentrate.
“The NCC has reasonable grounds to believe that Elgin Fruit Juice supplied goods that are unsafe or pose a potential risk to the public,” says Mabuza.
Mabuza has also warned that, should the investigation reveal that Elgin Fruit Juice contravened the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, then they would be issued with a fine.

“The Commission will refer the matter to the National Consumer Tribunal where we will be praying for an administrative fine of 10% of their total annual turnover or R1 million, whichever is the greater.”
The recent recall of apple juice products has affected brands like LiquiFruit, Ceres, Appletiser and Woolworths own brand.
This is after the fruit juices were found to contain elevated levels of mould which can cause gastrointestinal disturbances.
