ActionSA Limpopo chairperson Victor Mothemela filed a criminal complaint against Mpe and the municipality's senior officials at the Polokwane police station on Monday.

The case, which follows widespread allegations on social media last week, concerns tender irregularities that allegedly occurred between 2023 and 2025.

It is alleged that the municipality awarded tenders to companies with close ties to the mayor and senior officials in Polokwane.

"According to the complainant, tenders were awarded irregularly and in contravention of the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act and the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act during the above-mentioned period," says Limpopo police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba.

"Due to the seriousness of these allegations, this case has been referred to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation for further investigation and handling."

On Monday, Build One South Africa also approached the Special Investigating Unit, asking it to establish forensic investigations into the allegations.

The Hawks earlier withdrew an urgent application to compel Mpe to provide documents related to certain transactions involving his organisation, the Makoro Foundation, and the municipality.

The Hawks have applied to the Polokwane High Court to reverse the previous decision to withdraw its documentation request to the mayor.
