Sentencing proceedings in the murder case of Sindiso Magaqa began in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.

Sibusiso Ncengwa has admitted to being part of the plot to kill Magaqa, who was gunned down in uMzimkhulu in 2017.

Magaqa was allegedly targeted for exposing corruption within the local municipality.

Ncengwa's lawyer, Andrew Matlamela, pleaded with the court for a lesser sentence, arguing that his client had shown remorse and disclosed the names of those who ordered the hit.

He told the court Ncengwa has already spent eight years in custody for this case, and pleaded for a lesser sentence and  is already serving 30 years for an unrelated conviction involving murder, attempted murder, and illegal firearm possession.

Ncengwa has pointed the now late Umzimkhulu Mayor as the mastermind behind the 35-year-old's assassination plot.

Advocate Matlamela says the party should have acted back then.

"They should have sent some delegation from ANC to go to Magaqa to apologise and said our senior members killed Sindiso,  nothing from them. All that they're saying now is that, this killing has affected the organisation."
