Court to rule on publishing of matric results

The High Court in Pretoria will on Wednesday deliver its judgment on the urgency of the application to interdict the publishing of the 2024 matric exam results on public platforms.

The Information Regulator filed an urgent application to interdict the Department of Basic Education from releasing the matric results to the media over a potential violation of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
The two parties battled it out in court on Tuesday on the urgency of the application, the merits of the case will be delivered later.
The department plans to release the results using the exam numbers of learners, which it says only they know.
Speaking to the SABC after court proceedings, Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said any outcome of the court will not affect the release of the results.
"This court matter has no bearing whatsoever on the work that the department is doing. Our obligation is that we need to deliver results to the candidates at the centre where they sit for the examination. So that is not affected at all.
"We are here debating something that's an optional extra in terms of the platforms that we utilise to avail results to our candidates," he added.
