Court hears Jabulani Khumalo was present when MK ‘resignation’ letter sent to IEC

MK Party founder Jabulani Khumalo on Monday denied any knowledge of an email to the Independent Electoral Commission announcing his resignation from the party.

Khumalo’s legal counsel, Mfesane Ka-Siboto, wants the Electoral Court to declare Khumalo’s removal and Jacob Zuma’s subsequent elevation as the leader to be declared invalid and unlawful.

Khumalo was expelled from the party earlier this year.

The court heard that the former president’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forged Khumalo’s signature on a document to the IEC to create the impression that he was stepping down and Zuma would be his replacement.

“For the first time, evidence of who sent that email purporting to be Mr Khumalo’s letter. The impugned letter that we argue there is enough evidence to say it was forged by Ms Zuma-Sambudla,” said Ka-Siboto.

“In that email, you can see that Ms Sambudla herself sent that email to IEC, not Mr Khumalo. What is interesting is that in all the communications between MK Party and IEC, Mr Khumalo was always copied”.

However, the MK party’s legal representative, Advocate Dali Mpofu, told the court Khumalo was present when the email was sent to the IEC.

“The letter was signed and sent in front of everybody, and that answers the second question as to why was Mr Khumalo not copied in the email? Because he was there, he was in the room, and why would he be copied when he was there? He is the one who gave the letter to Ms Zuma-Sambudla to email in front of people, including his relatives.”

Mpofu added that the MK party leadership, including Zuma himself and his daughter, have been defamed through fabricated stories.
