CPUT student attacker under police guard in hospital

Western Cape police have confirmed that a 30-year-old man captured on a viral video stabbing a woman at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has been arrested.

The man is currently under police guard in hospital.

 


The incident took place on Saturday afternoon at a student accommodation in Belhar.

 


In a video circulating on social media, a man can be seen stabbing a female student in the stomach.



It has been confirmed that the man, who is a student at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), is married to the victim.

 


Western Cape police spokesperson F.C Van Wyk said a case of attempted murder has been registered.

 


"Belhar police registered an attempted murder case following a stabbing incident on Saturday afternoon at a student accommodation in Belhar, where a 26-year-old female student was injured.” 


“Circumstances surrounding this stabbing incident are under investigation. 

 


“A 30-year-old male suspect was arrested and is currently under police guard in hospital. The injured victim was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. investigations continue," said Van Wyk.



Meanwhile,  Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has welcomed the arrest of the suspect.



"Minister Nzimande welcomes the swift response of law enforcement agencies in arresting the perpetrator who, according to the video footage in circulation, was so merciless and barbaric in committing the crime against his spouse.  



“Minister Nzimande urges all institutions working with Higher Health (which oversees wellness at higher education institutions) to continue working collectively in implementing programmes towards addressing the challenges of sexual and gender-based violence within the Post School Education and Training system,” said spokesperson  Ishmael Mnisi.
