Creecy cautions as pedestrian deaths near 50% of road toll

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has once again pleaded with pedestrians to exercise caution when walking at night and avoid crossing highways.

Creecy was briefing the media on Tuesday in Pretoria, releasing a report on the Easter Road Safety Campaign.
The transport department recorded a 6% increase in road accident fatalities involving pedestrians.
Shortly before Easter holidays, 41% of road accident fatalities involved pedestrians.

“Fatalities involving pedestrians now account for 47% or almost half of all road deaths,” said Creecy.
“This shocking reality indicates that our message to pedestrians is not reaching home, and we have to do much more work at a local level where these accidents occur.”
Although she did not provide a specific number of pedestrian fatalities, Creecy said 12 pedestrians were arrested for jaywalking during the Easter Holiday period alone.
Ahead of May Day, the Minister said the Easter campaign will be extended to the 4th of May.
