Despite losing intensity after continuing its run for more than 500 kilometres inland (310 miles), the storm also injured nearly 30 people and affected about 45,000 while passing through Malawi on Monday.

It struck Blantyre, the nation's second-largest city with a population of 800,000 people in 2018.

"Out of the 10,159 affected households, 227 people have been displaced," said Malawi's Department of Disaster Management Affairs.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world with 71 percent of people living in extreme poverty, according to the World Bank.

Cyclone Chido has killed 31 people and injured more than 1,000 in the French overseas Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, according to estimates by the authorities on Wednesday.

In Mozambique, Chido also caused the death of at least 45 people and injured nearly 500 others, according to an official report released on Wednesday.
