Steenhuisen was reacting to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) which was delivered at the Opening of Parliament on Thursday evening.

“The truth of the matter is that South Africa is in deep, deep trouble. We are a bus that is accelerating very fast towards the cliff. People are suffering terribly and much more suffering is on the horizon. Lives are at stake, the situation is truly urgent.

“We call for radical action that goes to the heart of the problem which is an over controlling, incapable and unaccountable state. What we needed to hear about was the real progress to the real solutions to our real challenges,” adds Steenhuisen.

President Ramaphosa delivered his SONA 2021 for the first time under the Covid-19 Lockdown regulations.

It was the first Opening of Parliament since South Africa has been plunged into the coronavirus pandemic.

Over 3 million jobs have been lost since the beginning of the pandemic last year, with more still anticipated to be lost.
