DA suffers blow as Makashule Gana announces resignation from party
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Makashule Gana has announced his departure from the Democratic Alliance.

Gana, who is a member of the Gauteng legislature, has been a member of the DA for two decades, and is a former deputy federal chairperson.
He is the latest in a long line of black members who’ve resigned from the DA, including former youth leader, Mbali Ntuli, former leader Mmusi Maimane and former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba.
"I leave the DA with a clear conscience, no regrets, and a cemented sense of purpose and a calling to serve the country," said Gana, adding that he will not be leaving politics.
“The South African people deserve a country where all are free and secure to pursue a life of happiness and well-being. This requires bold, decisive leadership that gives power back to the people and enables them to work together in developing and implementing solutions that work for their communities.”
Gana said he is concerned at the widening trust deficit between citizens and political parties, which has led to lower voter turnout over the past few election cycles.

“I do not believe that any of the existing political parties can re-orientate their politics and internal culture to regain public trust on a massive scale.
“I believe that the next generation of politics in South Africa will be built on citizen political empowerment, localised organising, and participation to elevate local issues and to grow new, younger leaders to take communities and South Africa forward.
“There is a new generation of leaders raising their hands to shape a new political culture that does exactly that.”
Gana hasn’t given any clues as to where he might be going next, except to say he will be joining others in exploring the possibility of building an inclusive political alternative.
