DA wants police unit set up to probe ‘sabotage’ of essential infrastructure

The DA has called on the South African Police Service to establish a dedicated unit to investigate acts of sabotage on essential infrastructure.

The party briefed the media in Johannesburg on Monday on what it called the service delivery crises in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
In Johannesburg, thousands of residents have been left without water for more than two weeks after a lightning strike hit the Eikenhof pump station.
In Durban, residents have been battered by a service delivery backlog following a strike by municipal workers.
The DA’s chief whip in the National Assembly, Siviwe Gwarube, said they suspect some water outages may be due to acts of sabotage.
"(We are) calling on police to establish a Specialised Investigating Team to deal with and investigate acts of sabotage contributing to the service delivery collapse and ensure they report back to the Portfolio Committee in the National Assembly on their progress made."
Gwarube says the party has also called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to deploy the South African National Defence Force to assist with the water crisis.
