DA ‘wishes Van Damme well’ after former MP leaves party

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has confirmed that former MP Phumzile van Damme has decided to terminate her party membership.

Van Damme took to Twitter on Saturday to announce the termination of her DA membership.
“I have decided to terminate my DA membership. The misinformation monitoring and combatting project we will be rolling out during election season requires that I be non-partisan. Our plans are at an advanced stage. South Africa, first. Always has been,” she tweeted.
Van Damme joins a list of several other high-profile Black DA leaders to quit the party, including former leader Mmusi Maimane and former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba.
DA spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube says the party wishes her well.
“The DA has noted Ms Van Damme’s decision to terminate her membership. The party understands her need for complete neutrality in her new endeavours. We wish her well for this important work.”
Van Damme resigned as an MP last month, saying her resignation is not because the DA is racist, as claimed by some, but due to a “clique of individuals”.

Definitely not. The point is to present you with the truth so you can make your own decisions about which party to vote for without being manipulated by misinformation from political parties and other actors. https://t.co/OCHwakCgrU
