De Lille moves to dissolve the SA Tourism board

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has dissolved SA Tourism's board of directors after it failed to convince her why it should remain in office.

De Lille axed the board after it contravened its charter by holding a special board meeting not convened by the chair.

According to the minister, the board members failed to present a written response last week on the reasons for the meeting.

It also comes in the wake of the board's decision to suspend CEO Nombulelo Guliwe for misconduct last week.

In a statement on Wednesday, De Lille said she had previously warned the Board of the possible implications of failing to follow due process when convening special and ordinary meetings.

“On 4 July 2025, in a meeting with the board, followed by a letter to the board dated 13 July 2025, the minister expressed her concerns about the board’s failure to follow governance procedures, which undermines the integrity of the board and could render outcomes from such meetings procedurally invalid and unlawful,” said De Lille’s spokesperson Aldrin Sampear.

“In response, by way of a letter dated 22 July 2025, the board assured the minister that it has put in place interventions and these enhancements have and will ensure that all meetings are properly constituted, chaired, and documented.”

SA Tourism was recently plunged into a tender scandal after allegations of irregularities in awarding a R100 million tender to Pomme Express to organise Meetings Africa 2025 and Africa’s Travel Indaba 2025.
