Diepkloof protest ‘tense but not violent’

The Johannesburg metro police have cautioned motorists to be extra vigilant when driving in Diepkloof, Soweto.

Residents in the area have taken to the streets to protest against what they claim to be constant power cuts.

 

Several roads have been blocked with rocks and tyres.

 

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla says MM Drive in Soweto has been blocked with burning tyres.

“At the present moment MM Drive is closed off with burning tyres and rocks at the intersection of Marthinus Smuts and there are reports that a group of protestors have blocked off the entrance of Diepkloof Square shopping center. The situation is tense but not violent.”

 

Metro police officers are on scene to help divert traffic.
