Protesting EFF, ActionSA demand Polokwane mayor’s resignation

EFF and ActionSA members in Limpopo took to the streets of Polokwane on Wednesday to call for the resignation of Mayor John Mpe and municipal manager Thuso Nemugumoni.

Party members also spoke out against electricity price hikes, water supply issues, and what they described as nepotism and corruption in Polokwane.

The march, organised by the EFF, came amid allegations that the municipality awarded tenders to foreign-owned companies and Nemugumoni’s alleged Zimbabwean boyfriend.

“The issue of supply chain and the issue of Africa as one, the local people must benefit first,” said the EFF’s Limpopo chairperson, Lawrence Mapoulo.

“The same people that we are talking about, they have got their own municipality in Bulawayo and Harare, and other areas.

“We don’t say we don’t want them. We say we must be able to be one as Africa, and then from there, when we go to municipalities, we must prioritise the local people and business, not to take the entire capital project budget to Bulawayo.”

ActionSA provincial chairperson Victor Mothemela said the party wants issues of corruption in Polokwane to be addressed.

Mothemela said ActionSA laid a criminal complaint against Mpe and Nemugumoni when the allegations first surfaced last month.

“In my position, I’m having a case number from the police station and also the name of the investigating officer. What I can tell the nation is no one, until today, has tried to contact us or my office to at least take some statement from us.”
