Eskom, traffic congestion Gauteng's biggest economic threats - Mamabolo
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The latest Gauteng Household Travel Survey has revealed that the average travel time in the province has increased by 17% over the past 20 years.

The survey was conducted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo says the province’s two biggest economic threats are Eskom and traffic congestion on the roads.
"Congestion is the biggest disincentive to investors because it means their workforce or their goods cannot travel in a congested province.
"We are a province with a small landmass, we are not like the Northern Cape.
"Those increases mean, in particular, that for the poor households and the working class it is a double burden especially on top of high travelling costs in the province.”
Mamabolo said the province needs to promote non-motorised modes of transport to try and ease the congestion.
The survey also revealed that over 29% of trips in the peak periods take place through walking and minibus taxis account for 23% of all peak-period trips.
Private cars account for over 22% of peak-period trips.
