Expert warns of unrest if 'unfair steps' taken against Mkhwanazi

Willem Els, a security expert from the Institute of Security Studies, says the country is highly likely to experience civil unrest should the public feel unfair steps have been taken against KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on Sunday to chart the way forward following Mkhwanazi’s allegations of police corruption and political interference in criminal cases.
Mkwanazi has also accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and other top officials of using their influence to interfere in high-profile investigations.
Els believes Mkhwanazi has a tremendous amount of public support.
“Remember, Mkhwanazi is now a whistleblower. Mkhwanazi is seen as the champion for the people who rose up for them and who is fighting for them.
“So, should there be any action against him who is perceived as unfair to them, then the possibility is there that we might see another civil action.”
