Eyewitness recalls brazen Rivonia hit and run incident
Sarah Britten spoke to 'Breakfast with Martin Bester' after
witnessing the horrific incident in which a man was run over and killed by the
driver of a bakkie.
In a graphic video that has been widely shared the victim, believed to be a Zimbabwean national, can be seen on the ground moments before a bakkie runs over him repeatedly.
According to police, the incident took place in Rivonia on 5 April 2025.
“The police members in Sandton received a complaint of an accident. Upon arrival, they found a man lying on the side of the road with injuries all over his body. The paramedics declared him dead,” said Gauteng spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi
The police say preliminary information at their disposal indicates the suspect drove over the victim several times before fleeing the scene.
Meanwhile, sharing her account, Britten said she arrived at the scene after the video that has been circulated was taken.
“I arrived at the end of it all, when the driver of the bakkie fled. He drove off onto the road in front of me, and I realised what I had seen. I quickly turned left, into Autumn Road and stopped the car…
“I went to check on the victim who by this time was laying on Twelfth Avenue on the other side of the stop street. He was still alive.”
Britten said her nine-yea-old daughter was in the backseat of the car reading a book, and did not see the gruesome details.
“The witness who took the video also called the ambulance and the police, and he chased the guy to keep track of where he was going but he lost him.”
A case of murder has been registered while police investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
Police have not reported any arrests linked to the incident.
