It is alleged that the road tanker which was carrying dog feed, drove into the back of the truck that was standing on the side of the road with a load of bricks.

Shortly after the accident, the road tanker caught fire with the driver trapped inside.

Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Charles Mabaso says the accident occurred before 1 am on Tuesday morning on the N1 north near the R21 interchange.

Mabaso adds that nothing could be done for the driver who was burned beyond recognition.

“When emergency services arrived on scene the road tanker was still on fire with the driver still trapped inside and they had to extinguish the fire. As things stand, the scene has been handed over to the South African Police Service road crash investigators,” concludes Mabaso.

The road remains closed and motorists heading to the Capital have been urged to use alternative routes during peak morning traffic.
