Fifth suspect arrested in Tshwane transformer theft case

Police in Gauteng have arrested a fifth suspect in connection with the theft of a R7 million transformer belonging to the City of Tshwane.

The suspect handed himself over to police on Sunday.
Last week, three Tshwane officials were arrested in Laudium during an early morning operation.
Their arrest followed an ongoing investigation which started in November 2024 and led to the initial arrest of 11 suspects for the theft at the Laudium substation.
Ten of these suspects, who were subcontractors, were released after they could not be linked to the crime; however, one suspect who is an employee of the Tshwane Municipality remained behind bars and has since made several court appearances.
This suspect is expected to return to court on the 8th of August.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says the suspect who handed himself over to police on Sunday, is expected to appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
"The investigation indicated the suspect as the potential buyer for the stolen transformer and a warrant of arrest was issued for him."
