Fire at Jeppestown building amid cold snap

Johannesburg firefighters responded to a building fire on the corner of Janie and Jules Street in Jeppestown, Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning.

This comes as four toddlers were killed in a blaze in Mayfair on Monday.

Officials say the fire started in the basement of the building, on the corner of Janie and Jules Street, where shacks have been erected.
“On arrival, firefighters found a two-story building on fire. The fire started in the basement of the building where shacks were erected. Twelve shacks were destroyed in the incident. All occupants of the building were evacuated to safety on time,” said Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Xolile Khumalo.
She says no injuries were recorded, and the fire has been extinguished.
Meanwhile, EMS has urged residents to be extra cautious when using electrical appliances during the cold front.
