Northern Cape fires won't impact SANDF capability , assures Modise

Defence Minister Thandi Modise says the damage caused by the wildfires in the Northern Cape wildfires won’t impact the performance of the South African National Defence Force.

Modise spoke at a memorial service for six SANDF soldiers who died at the Lohatla Military Combat Training Centre in the Northern Cape when a wildfire ripped through the building last Friday.
She said the SANDF remains capable of defending the country.
"Nobody will say we are vulnerable here today because the equipment has burnt, and South Africa cannot be defended. It is defended. There is enough that we can go on to defend this country.”
She described the wildfires as unprecedented.
"The fires are unprecedented, and the speed was also very interesting. But is South Africa the only country that is experiencing fires in this state of climate change? We can expect more fires to rage," said Modise.
