Firoz Cachalia sworn in as acting police minister
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Professor Firoz Cachalia has officially been sworn in as the country's new acting police minister.

He replaces Senzo Mchunu, who has been placed on a leave of absence following damning allegations of corruption against him.
Cachalia was sworn in on Friday at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
"I solemnly affirm that I will be faithful to the Republic of South Africa and will obey, respect and uphold the Constitution and all other laws of the Republic and I undertake to hold my office as minister with honour and dignity and to be a true and faithful councillor and not to divulge directly or indirectly any secret matter entrusted to me," Cachalia said when taking his oath of office.
Cachalia’s appointment is closely tied to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry that will now probe the allegations against Mchunu.
That inquiry is to be chaired by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, who retired from the Constitutional Court on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Parliament announced the formation of an ad hoc committee to investigate separate allegations of corruption and collusion within SAPS raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Although Cachalia will sit in the Cabinet, he will not be a Member of Parliament — a constitutionally permissible exception in cases where the president makes an external appointment.
